Preparing for a High Performance Driving School PDF Print E-mail

As soon as you decide to attend:

One month in advance:

  • Have your vehicle inspected and correct any mechanical defects. »rationale »mechanical inspection form (not required for winter school)
  • If attending from out-of-town, make a reservation at the host hotel.>
  • If in doubt, verify insurance coverage.

One week in advance:

  • Have the vehicle serviced ... track driving brings with it considerable heat and stress. Having your fluids changed and/or topped up will reduce these effects.

The night before:

  • Make sure you have the following documentation ready for school check-in:
    • Completed mechanical inspection form (not required for winter school)
    • Work order(s) for any remedial work required
    • Documentation of brake fluid flush (not required for winter school)
    • Drivers license
    • Vehicle registration
    • Proof of insurance (your pink card will suffice)
  • Remove all loose items from the vehicle — including floor mats. You don't want an empty pop bottle finding its way under your brake pedal just as you approach turn 9, for example. A water-proof container such as a Rubbermaid storage box can be very useful to store any loose items you will be bringing to the school and keep them out of the weather.
  • Fill up with fuel.  »rationale
  • No air will be available at the track, so inflate your tires to the vehicle manufacturer's recommended cold pressure for vehicle load as it will be driven on the track.  You should expect that your tires will heat up on the track increasing pressure -- and your instructor will advise on how to adjust -- but is is much easier to start with enough pressure than to try to inflate at the track (unless you have very strong lungs).
  • Clean all windows and mirrors, and top up the windshield washer reservoir.
  • Go to bed early and get a good night's sleep.
